Chicago Crawford Station Project

Significant Project Features:

  • In-Situ Solidification (ISS) of approximately 211,000 cubic yards of contaminated soils at former MGP site
  • UCS target of 50 psi achieved on all samples
  • Permeability target of 1×10-6 cm/sec achieved on all samples

Description of Work

Geo-Solutions, Inc. (GSI) was contracted by Ramboll to perform remediation work at a former Manufactured Gas Plant site located in Chicago, IL. The project site, known as Crawford Station Parcels A&B, is currently owned by People’s Gas Light and Coke Company. GSI’s remediation work consisted of In-Situ Solidification (ISS) 211,000 cubic yards of contaminated soils via auger mixing and excavator bucket mixing. Blast Furnace Slag and portland cement grout was manufactured on site and blended with the soils to a maximum treatment depth of 30’ below working platform elevation. GSI utilized two crane mounted drilling platforms to perform the auger mixing and a single excavator to perform the bucket mixing. GSI’s scope of work also included surface water management, odor control, vibration and settlement monitoring around utilities, excavation & loadout of material around utilities, swell reconditioning, preclearing for MGP structures, and regrading of the ISS area.
