Source Area Soil Thermal Treatment

Significant Project Features:

  • Thermal treatment of 35 columns of impacted soil via large diameter auger steam injection
  • Injection of approximately 45,000 lbs. of Zero-Valent Iron (ZVI) and guar gum to serve as a post-treatment groundwater migration medium.
  • Utilization of owned steam injection treatment system, housed-boiler, and contaminate removal system.
  • Implementation of GSI’s patent for off-gas treatment.

Project Background:

The Site is a former industrial facility and equipment cleaning, testing, and repairs that resulted in a soil and groundwater contamination plume.  Thermal treatment was the selected remedial action.  Residual contaminates included Trichloroethane (TCE), 1,2,3 – Trichlorobenzene, and vinyl chloride, among others.

Description of Work:

  • Utilization of a large diameter auger to thermally treat TCE impacted soils and groundwater utilizing steam injection and reductive dechlorination agents for the completion of 35 columns.
  • Construction of a ZVI and Guar subsurface medium for potential future filtration of groundwater migration down gradient.
  • Maximum treatment depth from ground surface to approximately 65 feet below ground surface.
  • Prioritization of subsurface zones to maximize thermal treatment.

GSI utilized a Hain 450k crane mounted platform and large diameter auger plumbed into thermal treatment system to extract contaminates from the subsurface soils and groundwater.  GSI generated steam through an enclosed boiler and transferred the steam to the subsurface soils, volatized the contamination within the soil, which are then extracted through a vapor control system and carbon vessel treatment system.  GSI advanced the auger to a maximum depth of 65 feet Below Ground Surface, with additional thermal treatment in any areas with elevated contaminate levels.  All contaminate samples were analyzed through Geo-Solutions specialty Data Acquisition System.  After thermal treatment in each column was completed, GSI injected a ZVI and guar slurry as a polishing step.
