Geo-Solutions recently completed a mass excavation and replacement using the cement-bentonite slurry supported excavation technique. This technique, sometimes referred to as a piano key excavation, can be used to excavate impacted or undesirable soils without the need for expensive dewatering or conventional excavation support systems. The cement-bentonite (CB) slurry serves as a liquid shoring and hardens in place to serve as the soil replacement. Excavation under slurry (i.e. in the wet) also helps to keep odors and vapors at a minimum and the cement slurry helps to make the excavation spoils easier to handle (after setting).
