Nyack, NY: In Situ Solidification (ISS), Operable Unit No. 2 - Nyack Former MGP Site

Project Features:

  • In Situ Stabilization (ISS) by Large Diameter Auger Shallow Soil Mixing (SSM) method of 6,240 Cubic Yards (CY) of impacted soil.
  • ISS by Jet Grouting method of another 397 CY around obstructions and problem areas.
  • Jet Grouting of 235 lineal foot of the treatment area perimeter to ensure a seal was created between the interface of the large diameter SSM columns and the site bedrock.
  • Target unconfined compressive strength of 50-500 psi at 28 days and permeability less than 1x10-6

ISS was completed using Geo-Solutions' Delmag Model RH-18 track mounted rotary drilling rig. The Delmag RH-18 has an operating weight of 148,720 pounds (lbs) and approximately 133,000 foot-lbs. of torque available to turn the mixing auger plus a crowd (down) force of 58,450 lbs up to 25 feet below ground surface (fbgs) to the bedrock surface. A mixture of water and Portland cement grout was manufactured in Geo-Solutions' batch plant and pumped through a hollow-stem Kelly bar to the mixing auger. Columns were mixed in an overlapping pattern to provide the specified 100% coverage of the treatment area. 6,240 CY were completed using this method. Samples of the soil mix were collected daily or every 500 cubic yards and tested for unconfined compressive strength and Flex-Wall Permeability to ensure the contaminants are immobilized within the solidified soil-mixed monolith. Soil-mix attained over 50 psi and a permeability of approximately 1 x 10-6 cm/s.

Geo-Solutions also performed soil mixing by the high-pressure jet grouting method. This was completed to ensure the interface between the large diameter ISS columns and the site bedrock is sufficiently sealed. This method employed injecting the cement grout through ports located on a custom made sub-assembly on a conventional 4" drill string at ultra-high pressures (4000psi). Rotation and extraction of the drill string results in "columns" of soil-cement. These columns were installed along the outside perimeter of the treatment area and consisted of 235 lineal feet of jet grout column installation. Jet Grouting was also used to stabilize areas where obstructions prevented the completion of large diameter ISS columns. An additional 397 CY of obstruction grouting were completed using the jet grout method.
