Bio-Polymer Slurry Groundwater Collection Trench Sample Spec
BioPolymer Drain Technique is used to install a Toe Drain at a Dam Site in Utah
 |
Bio-polymer drains have gained popularity as a way to construct deep trenches to intercept and collect groundwater. A groundwater collection trench is constructed using slurry containing natural or synthetic long-chain polymers. The slurry holds the trench open and prevents it from collapsing much the same as a bentonite slurry does in a slurry trench. Once the groundwater collection trench is cut to full depth, collection pipes, well sumps, reactive materials, and other features are installed. Then the trench is backfilled with a porous sand or stone backfill. Once the bio-polymer drainage trench is completely backfilled, the slurry is broken using chemical of biological means and it turns back into water.
Bio-Polymer Projects
Bio-polymer drains have been used to:
Install leachate systems around landfills
Collect hazardous waste migrating off industrial sites
Create toe-drains for dam stabilization
Permeable reactive barriers
Stabilize of sliding land masses.
The Benefits of Bio-Polymer Trenches
Bio-polymer drains have numerous advantages over conventional methods for constructing deep drains:
No one has to enter the trench. All work is done from the ground surface
No water is generated during the construction process
Fast construction time
Controlled trench dimensions thereby minimizing backfill material costs
Low cost compared to conventional construction
The trenches can be constructed without shoring, making subsequent installation of leachate lines and filter fabric much easier
