Concept Feasibility Studies

Once a range of potential remedies has been selected, it is time to hone in on the practicalities and economics of each alternative. Geo-Solutions brings a contractor's experience and perspective to this process. We work to analyze each problem and its potential resolution. Because of our extensive experience, we can quickly weed out impractical concepts and provide accurate budgets for recommended alternatives. These alternatives, as you will see below, can range from Dynamic Compaction to In Situ Soil Mixing to slurry wall trenches to a wide variety of other construction technologies involving soil and groundwater.

Concept Feasibility Study Project Examples

Here are a few outlines of concept feasibility studies that Geo-Solutions has performed recently:

Dynamic Compaction

On a recent assignment, we worked with the owner of a large strip-mined site to evaluate potential foundation systems that might apply to as-yet unplanned structures. We were able to identify several feasible solutions including one method of ground improvement, Dynamic Compaction, that would result in very economical foundation costs. We produced a report that will be used by the property owner to help convince prospective tenants to develop sites.

In Situ Soil Mixing

On another project, we worked with the design engineer for the remediation of a former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP). The MGP impacted soils required removal or treatment. We helped to devise plan and wrote work plans for In Situ Soil Mixing to treat the soils below the groundwater table at a cost that was significantly less costly and risky compared to excavation and disposal. We helped the engineer sample the soils, performed a design mix study, and helped to implement a pilot study that was useful in convincing regulatory authorities that In Situ Soil Mixing was a viable and acceptable method for remediation of these sites. After the design was approved, we provided construction oversight to ensure that the design was properly implemented.

Slurry Wall Construction: Multiple Bentonite Mixtures

An owner required a groundwater barrier to prevent impacted groundwater from affecting neighboring properties. The owner’s engineer designed a groundwater control system, but the presence of existing structures, underground utilities, on going production activities, and limited working space prompted him to call us for our advice. Geo-Solutions was enlisted to evaluate the design for construction cost and feasibility. We were able to make several recommendations that avoided several problem underground pipelines. We also suggested using a soil-bentonite slurry wall in some portions and cement-bentonite slurry wall in other portions of the alignment to minimize impacts to ongoing site activities and reduce restoration costs. We also performed a laboratory design mix program to help develop the mixtures of materials for construction and better hone in estimated material costs. After approval of the design, we were hired on a technical assistance basis and provided key slurry wall mix plant equipment and supervision for the construction.
