Bench Scale Testing Program and Site Inspection
Source Removal through Soil Mixing with ZVI-Clay Addition: Camp Lejeune, NC

Project Summary

ZVI-Clay Mixing

A former dry cleaners on the Marine Corp Base had a history of discharging PCE, TCE and other DNAPLs which were later discovered in the groundwater beneath the site.  A number of remediation approaches were attempted to remediate the contamination at the site, but none were successful.  A new technology, ZVI-Clay was identified as a potentially cost-effective treatment for removing the DNAPLs.  CH2M Hill led a research effort with Geo-Solutions and Colorado State University (CSU) to find a practical and effective method for applying ZVI-Clay on this site. CH2M Hill and AGVIQ later implemented the technology at Site 88 and successfully demonstrated the technology.

Steve Day of Geo-Solutions and Dr. Tom Sales of CSU served as the Chief Investigators for the research effort at CSU.   Geo-Solutions directed the formulating of ZVI-Clay mixtures for workability and reduced cost.  CSU provided the laboratory facilities as well as the expertise in ZVI-Clay chemistry.  Geo-Solutions also proposed and promoted the use of bentonite in lieu of other more expensive and less workable clays. The laboratory testing program produced a successful and practical formulation for removing the DNAPLs from Site 88.

Geo-Solution’s involvement in the project extended to a site inspection to observe construction and quality control methods.  It is critically important to inject the correct proportions of ZVI, and Geo-Solutions experience in testing and construction with ISS technologies were utilized and modified by the construction team for use in ZVI-Clay construction.

Soil Mixing Equipment

A number of important observations were made during the project which the project team investigated and addressed including hydrogen gas off-gassing, post-treatment soil stabilization, and equipment optimization.  This project has led to the further development of the ZVI-Clay technology.

The successful remediation of Site 88 was eventually completed using the methods and formulations proposed by Geo-Solutions.
