US Army Corps of Engineers: Series of Projects to Strengthen Levees
Project Summary
Excavation Process during first Marysville Project
 |
These walls were all constructed to strengthen the subsoils of flood levees to prevent under-seepage and potential failures during flood events. Permeability requirements for SB were 1 x 10-9 m/sec and for SCB, 5 x 10-9 m/sec. Geo-Solutions followed a very complicated QC program to ensure that all wall requirements were met.
The photo to the right shows the excavation proceeding to depths of 22 meters (72 feet) on the first Marysville project. The project had special work area limitations, with the toe of the cut-out dike on one side and an environmentally sensitive area on the other. The total work area available for construction was only about 20 meters wide.

Backfill was mixed with an extended reach excavator with the assistance of a small bulldozer. Because of the space limitations, the mixing excavator sat over the recently backfilled trench on wooden mats, where it could reach to mix and place the backfill.
