Cornell University: Slurry Wall Installation at Radioactive Waste Site
Project Summary
Slurry Wall Installation at Radioactive Waste Site in Ithaca, NY
 |
Cornell University had used a wooded section near the school as a dump for waste products from radioactive experiments and projects for a number of years. Waste included animal carcasses, and other contaminated materials. The project design was to surround the site with a slurry wall and install a capping system over the site to exclude groundwater. Wall permeability requirements were 1 x 10-9 m/sec, and samples were taken at regular intervals to monitor compliance.
The work followed an earlier similar project that had been installed at a similar dump for chemical wastes. That site contained glass bottles with unknown chemicals and gas cylinders with unknown gases dumped in a haphazard manner in the woods. The level of contamination at this site was unusually high.
Geo-Solutions teamed with the General Contractor and provided design mix services, slurry plant and long stick excavating equipment. The soil profile was alluvial soils overlying a relatively impervious till. The project was completed with no issues.
