Soil-Bentonite Slurry Wall Installation Central Weber Sewer Improvement District Ogden, Utah

Project Summary

Expansion of the regional Sewage Treatment facility involved developing a large area with a high groundwater table and soft sandy soils. Previous construction activities encountered extreme groundwater conditions on this site. Working with the local contractor, Geo-Solutions helped to design and build a groundwater control system for the sewage treatment plant expansion that included two soil-bentonite slurry walls around areas that required mass excavation to depths of 28 feet inside the barrier walls.

The first SB wall was approximately 800 feet long and the second wall was approximately 3000 feet long and up to 36 ft deep. Geo-Solutions provided technical assistance for the construction effort. The technical assistance included slurry trench specialist, specialty slurry mixing equipment, and bentonite materials. Geo-Solutions, Inc. provided a full time supervisor who supervised contractor quality control of the work as well as operation of key equipment. In addition to the supervision of the project, Geo-Solutions, Inc. staff provided all QC, sampling, laboratory testing, and training of the local contractor’s employees. The specialty equipment included a long stick and slurry trenching bucket for a JD 450 excavator.

When the treatment plant excavations were made, minimal dewatering was required, due to the low permeability of the soil-bentonite backfill.
