Pump and Treat

Bennington, VT: Bio-Polymer Slurry Trench, Ground Water Collection Trench Construction, Superfund Landfill

Geo-Solutions Inc was contracted by Environmental Partners Group, Inc. for the installation of 2 bio-polymer collection trenches at the Burgess Brothers Superfund Landfill site in Bennington, Vermont. In addition to the trenching, Geo-Solutions performed ancillary work to make the collection trenches operational. Geo-Solutions installed both collection trenches using the bio-polymer (BP) slurry trenching construction method. Geo-Solutions began the work in August 2013 and shutdown during the winter months. The remaining work was completed in the spring of 2014.

Prior to the BP trenching operations, Geo-Solutions cleared stumps, constructed a temporary work platform, and constructed spoil stockpiling/loading areas. Post BP trenching, Geo-Solutions developed the trench by breaking the BP slurry and performed site restoration.

The compliance boundary trench was constructed to a length of 180 feet and a maximum depth of 32 feet below ground surface. The down gradient trench was constructed to a length of 120 feet and a maximum depth of 28 feet below ground surface. Both trenches were excavated with a Komatsu PC 490 fitted with a custom long reach boom and stick. Geo-Solutions used a combination of Rantec H3200 cellulose gum, busan, and soda ash mixed with water as the slurry for the BP slurry trenching.

Collection pipes and extraction wells were placed in both trenches prior to backfilling. Each trench was backfilled with pea gravel. Concrete vaults were installed at the surface to house electrical wires running to the extraction wells. After all trench work was completed Bentomat liner caps were installed for both trenches along with the excess spoils stockpile and rip rap draining areas.
